Edificações Centenárias do Hospital Psiquiátrico São Pedro, Historic psychiatric hospital in Porto Alegre, Brazil

The Edificações Centenárias do Hospital Psiquiátrico São Pedro is a historic medical complex with six two-story pavilions arranged along an east-west line. The buildings blend neoclassical and eclectic style elements with practical features such as large windows and garden spaces.

The Hospício São Pedro was founded on 13 May 1874, the sixth asylum for the insane during the Second Reign, and construction began in late 1879 on a 33-hectare tract along today's Avenida Bento Gonçalves in the Partenon district. Its first section opened on 29 June 1884, the feast of Saint Peter, and the whole was completed in 1903. It was renamed Hospital São Pedro in 1925 and took its current name in 1961.

The asylum's name changed with the institution: Hospício São Pedro until 1925, Hospital São Pedro until 1961, then Hospital Psiquiátrico São Pedro. In 1939 Dr. Jacintho Godoy created a nursing course that ran until 1952 and trained about 191 nurses. From 1961 the Melanie Klein Division, created under Luiz Pinto Ciulla, drew young doctors from across Brazil for psychoanalytic training.

The São Pedro complex is an active psychiatric hospital, not a tourist site, so access is limited to the exterior along Avenida Bento Gonçalves in the Partenon district. The grounds cover 13.9 hectares with 43,710 square meters of buildings, and the historic pavilions are visible from the street.

The original design deliberately integrated many windows and open garden spaces because nineteenth-century doctors believed natural light and fresh air helped patient recovery. This belief led to an unusually open layout for a medical facility of that era.
