Ilha dos Lobos, Wildlife refuge island in Torres, Brazil
Ilha dos Lobos is a small volcanic island off the coast of Torres with rocky formations and steep cliff faces. The island rises from the ocean floor and features rough, rocky shores where marine mammals rest and gather.
The island was officially protected as an ecological reserve through a presidential decree in 1983. Later, in 2005, it received additional protection as a wildlife refuge to ensure long-term conservation of the marine animals living there.
The island serves as a gathering place for sea lions and fur seals that share this rocky home throughout the year. From a distance, visitors can observe how these marine mammals interact and move across the rock formations.
Visitors can only view the island from a boat and must maintain a safe distance from the shore. Landing on the island and fishing in the area are strictly prohibited to protect the wildlife.
This is the only sea island along the Rio Grande do Sul coast and hosts one of the region's largest populations of sea lions and fur seals. The rocky outpost draws researchers and nature enthusiasts who study the animal life from a safe viewing distance.
