Malacara Canyon

Malacara Canyon, Natural canyon in Praia Grande, Brazil

Malacara Canyon is a gorge in Brazil with steep rock walls and the Malacara River running through it. The river course creates natural pools and passes through several distinct sections with different rock formations.

The area was named after a historical horse breed that once inhabited the region and was known for distinctive markings. This connection to the local animal life gave the place its name.

The canyon sits within a UNESCO Global Geopark, drawing visitors interested in understanding geology firsthand. You can observe how water shaped the rocks over time and see the mineral deposits visible in the stone formations.

Exploring the site requires a certified guide and involves crossing the river several times during your visit. It is important to wear shoes with good grip and follow the guide's instructions, as the paths can be slippery.

Crystal-filled geodes can be spotted within volcanic rocks along the walls, catching light in surprising ways. A special section shaded by fig trees features several deep natural pools that fill and empty depending on the season.
