Serra Furada State Park

Serra Furada State Park, Natural reserve in Orleans, Brazil

Parque Estadual da Serra Furada is a protected forest area with steep hillsides, deep valleys, and elevations ranging from 400 to 1,480 meters. The landscape supports diverse vegetation and is home to nearly 200 bird species across its varied terrain.

The protected area was established in 1980 to safeguard the forest ecosystems and natural environments that define this region. This action marked growing recognition of the need to preserve these landscapes.

The land has long been central to hunting and gathering practices of people who lived here, and today this connection shapes how locals view and protect the forest. Visitors notice this through the knowledge that guides share and the pride people take in preserving what they inherited.

Visitors can hike on marked trails that pass through private land to reach different parts of the forest. Since extensive tourist facilities are still being developed, bringing a local guide and planning ahead makes the experience much better.

A natural sandstone arch cuts through the landscape with a large hole that can be seen from several kilometers away. This unusual rock formation gives the park its distinctive character and its name.
