Rio Water Planet, Water park in Vargem Grande, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Rio Water Planet was a large water park located at the base of Pedra Branca Mountain in Vargem Grande with over 40 different water attractions. The grounds included wave pools, various slides, and specially designed areas for visitors of different ages.
The park opened in October 1998 and was at that time the largest water park in Latin America. After financial difficulties, it closed in October 2018.
For over 20 years, this venue served as a major gathering place for families from Rio de Janeiro, especially during hot summer months. People came here to spend time together and escape the bustle of the city.
The grounds were located on Estrada dos Bandeirantes and were easily accessible by car. The park had separate areas and facilities for small children from age 2 and for older visitors to accommodate all age groups.
The park was one of the first in Brazil to use a business model with multiple ownership companies, which was new for the water park industry. This model of shared management and participation later influenced other similar projects in the region.
