Chacaltaya

Chacaltaya, Mountain summit in La Paz, Bolivia.

Chacaltaya is a mountain peak in the Andes reaching 5,395 meters elevation, with views across toward Lake Titicaca and the surrounding high peaks of the region. A road climbs to within 95 vertical meters of the summit, passing through terrain that once held a glacier.

The mountain gained distinction in 1939 when South America's first rope tow was built here, powered by an automobile engine that operated only during winter months from November to March. This installation made it a pioneering site for mountain recreation in the region.

The mountain holds deep meaning for Aymara communities who have lived in the surrounding valleys for generations, maintaining their connection to the land through everyday practices. Visitors can observe this relationship in the traditional settlements and fields that shape the valley below.

The road eliminates the need for a long climb and allows you to gain elevation quickly, which helps your body adjust to the high altitude. Starting early and taking time to acclimate to the thin air is worth planning ahead.

The peak once held a glacier that covered measurable ground in 1940 but completely disappeared in the following decades, leaving behind bare rock and scree. This dramatic loss reveals the mountain's transformation and the environmental shifts affecting the high Andes.
