Chacaltaya, Mountain summit in La Paz, Bolivia.
The Chacaltaya summit reaches an elevation of 5,395 meters above sea level, offering views toward Lake Titicaca and surrounding Andean peaks.
The mountain contained South America's first rope tow installation in 1939, which operated using an automobile engine during winter months from November to March.
The mountain stands within the traditional lands of Aymara communities who have maintained their agricultural practices in the surrounding valleys for generations.
Visitors can reach the summit through a road that extends to within 95 vertical meters of the peak, making it accessible for altitude acclimatization.
The former glacier, measuring 0.22 square kilometers in 1940, completely vanished by 2009, marking significant environmental changes in the region.
