Kuhikugu, Archaeological site at Xingu River headwaters, Brazil.

The complex spans across 20,000 square kilometers in the Amazon rainforest, containing twenty interconnected settlements with roads, fortifications, and protective trenches.

Michael Heckenberger discovered the site while working with Kuikuro people, revealing a settlement that housed 50,000 inhabitants from 1500 to 400 years ago.

The inhabitants built horizontal monuments on the ground for their deities, differentiating them from other South American civilizations that constructed vertical structures.

The settlement incorporated advanced engineering features including fish farming dams, cultivated fields, and orchards to sustain its large population.

The largest village contained 5,000 inhabitants and featured wooden palisades, while Lake Lamakuka provided fish as the primary protein source.
