Plano Piloto, Administrative region in Federal District, Brazil
Plano Piloto is an administrative region in Brasília with an airplane-shaped layout organizing residential, commercial, and governmental sectors along broad avenues. The design connects all functions into one planned urban whole.
Architect Lúcio Costa designed Plano Piloto in 1957 as part of President Kubitschek's vision for a modern capital in Brazil's interior. The project marked a turning point in the nation's urbanization and modernization.
The place contains museums, theaters, and cultural spaces woven into modernist government buildings that shape how people experience the city.
The metro system connects different sectors through stations positioned near residential areas and administrative centers. The wide streets and clear layout make it easy to navigate between different parts.
Each residential block, called a superquadra, includes local shops, schools, and recreation spaces within six-story buildings surrounded by green areas. This design makes every block function as its own neighborhood with its own services.
