Dois Irmãos State Park, State park in Recife, Brazil
Dois Irmãos State Park is a large protected area featuring tropical forest and an integrated zoological garden on its grounds. The zoo occupies a small portion of the overall park land and displays native and non-native animal species within a forested setting.
The land began in 1916 as a forest nursery situated on the remnants of a historic sugar mill. It evolved into a zoobotanical garden in 1939 and has remained a protected space ever since.
The park functions as a gathering place where locals and visitors learn about tropical ecosystems and wildlife conservation through daily interactions with nature. It represents an important connection between the city and its natural heritage for the surrounding community.
The park is most easily visited during daytime hours and has pathways throughout for exploration at various levels of difficulty. Educational centers within the grounds provide information about the different habitats and species you will encounter.
The park protects a significant remaining section of Atlantic Forest, a rainforest ecosystem that once covered much of this region but is now rare to find. This forest remnant contains species found in very few other places on Earth, making visits here a chance to see a landscape that is rapidly disappearing.
