Old Provost

The Old Provost is a stone building from the early 1800s with thick walls and barred windows that was built to serve as a prison. Its rectangular shape and reinforced construction clearly show the purpose for which it was designed.

The building was created in 1838 during British rule as a military prison holding both soldiers and civilians. This role shaped life in Makhanda throughout the entire 19th century.

The structure shows British military style from the colonial era and stands as a mark of power relations in the region at that time. Visitors can see in the rooms how the architecture reflected the lives of those who were held there.

The building stands in downtown Makhanda and is easy to reach on foot, especially if coming from the main streets. It is best visited during daytime hours when the interior details and cell areas are clearly visible.

The original iron rings used to chain prisoners are still visible on the interior walls of the cells. These details show directly the harsh conditions that people had to endure here.
