N2 road, National highway along the eastern coast of South Africa
The N2 is South Africa's main national highway, stretching across the country from Cape Town in the southwest to Ermelo in the north, connecting coastal areas with inland regions. The road runs through multiple provinces and passes past dramatic cliffs, river valleys, and stretches of open countryside.
The road began construction in the 1970s as South Africa established its national highway system, drawing on the American Interstate Highway model for its design. Over the following decades, sections were expanded and improved to handle growing traffic and connect developing regions.
The road links communities across multiple provinces, bringing together people from coastal towns and inland cities in shared journeys.
Be prepared for varying road conditions along the route, as sections range from well-maintained highways to more basic stretches, especially in remote areas. It is wise to check your vehicle before long drives and carry sufficient water and supplies, as services can be sparse between towns.
The road crosses the Bloukrans Bridge, one of Africa's highest concrete arch bridges, which spans a deep river gorge with a dramatic arc. Many travelers pass over it without noticing the engineering feat above and around them.
