Dwesa Nature Reserve, Coastal nature reserve in Eastern Cape, South Africa
Dwesa Nature Reserve is a coastal protected area along the Wild Coast that encompasses forests, grasslands, and rivers flowing to the Indian Ocean. The 3900-hectare site spreads across a remote coastline with natural habitats for wildlife.
The reserve was established to protect and restore the natural ecosystems of this coastal region. Over time, native animal species including crocodiles, buffalo, and antelope were reintroduced to help restore ecological balance.
The Xhosa communities living nearby have long-standing ties to this land and its resources. Today they work alongside the reserve to practice sustainable management while maintaining their traditional connection to the territory.
The site offers basic accommodation such as self-catering chalets and camping areas for visitors wanting to spend time in nature. Bring cash with you since credit cards are not accepted, and expect no cell phone reception in the area.
The protected zone extends far out into the sea, linking subtropical and warm temperate ocean habitats together. This underwater transition zone is just as important to conservation as the land itself.
