Umgeni River, River system in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
The Umgeni River is a river system in KwaZulu-Natal that flows from the inland highlands toward the Indian Ocean near Durban. The waterway is managed by four major dams that regulate the water supply for the communities throughout the region.
Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama anchored at the river's mouth in 1497 and refilled his fleet's water supplies. This encounter led him to name the entire region Natal.
The name Umgeni comes from the Zulu language and means 'the river of entrance.' Today, the waterway remains deeply connected to local traditions and ceremonies practiced by communities along its course.
The river can be accessed at several points along its course, especially near the dams or close to Durban. The area is best visited during times with adequate water flow to experience the river at its fullest.
Each January, the Dusi Canoe Marathon draws thousands of paddlers who travel from Pietermaritzburg down to Durban. This event reveals how the river serves today as both a living connection between communities and a playground for water sports enthusiasts.
