Gaza Province, Administrative province in southern Mozambique
Gaza Province is an administrative region in southern Mozambique characterized by savannas, wetlands, and the Limpopo River cutting through agricultural areas. The territory forms an important ecological transition zone between different landscapes of the country.
The province was created in 1954 when colonial authorities divided the Sul do Save District into separate administrative regions. This reorganization established the boundaries that continue to shape the area today.
The Shangaan people shape everyday life here through their traditions and language, which you hear spoken alongside Portuguese in markets and public gatherings. Their customs remain a vital part of local identity and how the community connects with its heritage.
The capital Xai-Xai sits on the EN1 national highway, which crosses the province and provides access to other districts and neighboring areas. This road serves as the main connection for travelers moving through the region.
The Limpopo National Park extends beyond the province's borders, connecting the area to a transboundary conservation zone that spans into South Africa and Zimbabwe. This cross-border partnership creates one of the largest connected protected areas in the region.
