Gitarama Province, Former province in central Rwanda.
Gitarama Province was an administrative region in central Rwanda situated between Kigali and the western territories. The area was divided into several districts and contained various towns that served as regional centers.
The region was established as Gitarama Prefecture in 1959 and was given provincial status in 2002. It was dissolved in 2006 and incorporated into other administrative divisions.
The territory served as the foundation for the Parmehutu political movement and maintained strong agricultural traditions among its population of 851,451 residents.
Muhanga, the former provincial capital, remains an important transportation hub with accommodations and markets for visitors. Its central location makes it easy to reach other regions of Rwanda.
The landscape features the distinctive Kamegeri rock formations and Busaga forest, which remain natural landmarks within the current Southern Province boundaries.
