Gîte du Volcan

Gîte du Volcan is a mountain lodge positioned at 2240 meters near the Piton de la Fournaise crater. The facility accommodates up to 57 guests in dormitory rooms of varying sizes and includes a restaurant overlooking the Rivière de l'Est valley.

The lodge was established as a key stop along the Grande Traversée de la Réunion hiking trail that crosses the island's mountain regions. Since opening, it has served hikers traveling between the Bourg-Murat and Basse-Vallée sections of the route.

The name reflects the lodge's connection to the volcano that dominates this mountain landscape. Visitors hear French and Creole spoken daily, languages that shape the social fabric of this highland community.

The on-site restaurant requires meal reservations 48 hours in advance for breakfast, lunch, and dinner service. It is best to contact the lodge directly to confirm available times and discuss any dietary preferences with staff.

The facility is undergoing transformation into an ecological lodge powered by solar energy. The future setup will feature 24 dormitory beds and 5 family rooms to reduce environmental impact.
