Mtwara Port, Maritime freight terminal in Mtwara, Tanzania.
Mtwara Port is a deep-water port on the Indian Ocean coast in Tanzania with a quay wall about 685 meters long that can accommodate up to four large ocean vessels and one coastal ship at the same time. The facility handles various cargo types including standard and container freight with about 15,000 square meters of covered storage space.
The port was constructed between 1948 and 1954 by the British colonial administration as part of an agricultural development program for the Tanganyika region. The project was part of wider economic plans to boost agricultural exports from the area.
The port serves as a vital trade hub for the southern region, linking local communities with trading partners across the wider area through maritime routes.
The port operates around the clock since its natural depth allows large ships to enter and exit at any time without tidal restrictions. Visitors should be aware that as an active cargo terminal, movement may be restricted and proper safety precautions are necessary.
The consistent water depth between 9.5 and 13.5 meters makes tidal dependence unnecessary, which sets this location apart among tropical African ports. This natural advantage was valued when the site was first selected and remains one of the facility's main features.
