The Mnazi Bay-Ruvuma Estuary Marine Park spans 650 square kilometers along the Indian Ocean, containing mangroves, coral reefs, seagrass beds, and three islands.
The marine protected area received official designation in July 2000 under Tanzania's Marine Parks and Reserves Act, establishing conservation measures for coastal ecosystems.
Eleven villages with approximately 30,000 residents maintain traditional fishing practices within the park boundaries, depending on marine resources for their sustenance.
Visitors can access the park through Mtwara by road or air, with opportunities for diving, swimming, and exploring more than 250 coral species.
The marine park contains natural gas reserves discovered in 1982, now supplying electricity to the Mtwara and Lindi regions through a power generation facility.
