Kigamboni Bridge, Cable-stayed bridge in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
Kigamboni Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge that spans across the Kurasini estuary and connects the Kurasini and Vijibweni districts on opposite shores. The structure accommodates vehicle traffic across six lanes while also providing separate passages for pedestrians and cyclists.
Construction began in 2012 and the bridge opened in 2016, replacing the ferry service that previously connected the two districts. This project marked a major shift in how people crossed the estuary between these neighborhoods.
The National Social Security Fund of Tanzania invested 136 million dollars in the bridge construction, demonstrating the country's infrastructure development priorities.
The bridge is open to traffic around the clock with approach roads from both sides making access straightforward. Visitors should expect traffic congestion during morning and evening rush periods when most people cross.
An elevated interchange connects the bridge directly to the Nelson Mandela expressway, creating a seamless link to one of the city's major traffic routes. This engineering solution allows vehicles to move efficiently between the bridge and the highway system without ground-level intersections.
