Ikulu, Presidential residence in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
Ikulu is a presidential residence in Dar es Salaam comprising six interconnected structures topped with red-brown tiled hipped roofs. The complex sits at the entrance to the natural harbor, occupying extensive grounds that offer views toward both the ocean and city center.
The British architect John Sinclair designed and built Ikulu in 1922 during the colonial period, replacing a German structure that had been destroyed by the Royal Navy. This reconstruction marked a shift in architectural authority and control over the harbor settlement.
The building combines Arabic, African, and Indian architectural styles in its design, visible in the pointed arch doorways and white exterior walls. Inside, traditional African terrazzo floors give the spaces their distinctive character.
The grounds extend across spacious terrain with clear sightlines to the Indian Ocean and the surrounding city. Public access is limited since this is an active government residence and restricted site.
Two male lions have guarded the western brass-studded doors since 2001, topped with the national coat of arms. These feline sentries serve as a striking visual marker of authority at this important location.
