Île Sainte-Marie, Tropical island in eastern Madagascar.
Located 30 kilometers from mainland Madagascar, Sainte-Marie stretches 49 kilometers long and 5 kilometers wide, surrounded by crystal-clear lagoons and coral reefs.
During the 17th and 18th centuries, more than a thousand pirates established their base on the island, taking advantage of its strategic position near maritime trading routes.
The Betsimisaraka people maintain their ancestral traditions through ceremonies and rituals, integrating elements from both local customs and pirate heritage.
The island experiences a tropical climate with temperatures ranging from 25 to 34 degrees Celsius and receives over 3,500 millimeters of annual rainfall.
Between June and September, numerous humpback whales gather in the protected waters around the island for mating and giving birth.
