Mikumi National Park, National park in Morogoro Region, Tanzania
Mikumi is a protected area in Morogoro Region, Tanzania, connecting open savanna with acacia forests and seasonal river courses. The main road to Zambia crosses the terrain and divides the wide grasslands where wildlife gathers throughout the year.
The area received official protection status in 1964, becoming the fourth reserve of its kind in the country. The link to the Selous Wildlife Reserve in the south developed over the following decades through the designation of corridors for migrating animals.
The name comes from the Borassus palms that grow in the region and are called mikumi in Swahili. These palms still shape the view along the river courses and serve as landmarks for visitors.
A paved road from Dar es Salaam leads directly into the area and allows access throughout the year, even during the rainy season. The dry months between June and October bring animals closer to the water sources and make observation easier.
The giraffes here show features of both East African subspecies and are therefore studied by researchers. Their coat patterns lie between the clear spots of the Masai giraffe and the web-like lines of the northeastern form.
