Morogoro is a city in eastern Tanzania situated at the base of the Uluguru Mountains, serving as an important agricultural and trade center. The city sits in a fertile region known for producing grain, fruit, and vegetables.
The city was established by German colonial administration in the late 19th century as an administrative center to control the region. Later it developed into an important transportation hub and trading point along routes connecting to Dar es Salaam.
The Sukuma and Ngoni communities contribute to the city's identity through their traditional music, dance performances, and annual Morogoro Urban Festival.
The city is easily reached by bus or car via the main road connecting it to Dar es Salaam and other regions. Visitors find accommodation and food in town, and the best access to local markets and products is early in the morning.
The organization APOPO trains Gambian pouched rats in Morogoro for detecting landmines and tuberculosis through specialized programs.
