Bagamoyo, Historical seaport in Pwani Region, Tanzania

Bagamoyo is a coastal town in Pwani Region that stretches along the Zanzibar Channel on the Indian Ocean shore, roughly 75 kilometers northwest of Dar es Salaam. The settlement features restored colonial structures, local shops, and accommodations concentrated mainly around the historic center near the waterfront.

The German East Africa Company established Bagamoyo as its first administrative capital from 1887 to 1891, with colonial buildings remaining as physical reminders of that era. This period launched European control over the region and shaped how the settlement developed in the decades that followed.

The town serves as a living center for Swahili artistic traditions, with local artists creating works in restored colonial structures where performances and exhibitions continue regularly. Walking through the streets, you can encounter craftspeople and performers who keep these practices alive as part of their daily community life.

You can reach this town via paved roads from Dar es Salaam, with the journey taking roughly two hours and several guesthouses and restaurants available near the historic quarter. Most visitors explore the center on foot, and the cooler morning and evening hours offer the most comfortable walking conditions.

Local shipwrights continue building traditional wooden dhow sailboats using methods handed down through generations of boat makers in this port town. This craft tradition has become increasingly rare, making this a notable place to witness these time-honored maritime skills in practice.
