Mulan, Aboriginal community in East Kimberley, Western Australia.
Mulan is an Indigenous community settlement located near Lake Gregory in East Kimberley, Western Australia. The community is home to around 110 residents who depend on local services and their deep connection to the surrounding land.
The community took shape in the late 1970s when Walmajarri people moved from Balgo mission to Lake Gregory Station. This relocation established what became a formally organized settlement in 1979.
The residents speak Kukatja and maintain living ties to their ancestral lands through everyday activities and knowledge passed down within the community. These language and land connections shape how people understand their identity and their place in the region.
The settlement is on Aboriginal Land, and visitors will need permission to enter. The Rangers Office can advise on current access conditions and how to obtain the required approvals.
The community received a Crown Reserve in 1985 that transferred to the Aboriginal Lands Trust, giving official recognition to the territory. This established land ownership that remains central to community management today.
