Prasasti Muara Cianten

Prasasti Muara Cianten is a stone inscription located on the banks of the Cisadane River in the Cibungbulang district of Bogor. The stone displays carved patterns with interlocking designs that reflect the artistic traditions of its era.

The stone was discovered in 1864 by N.W. Hoepermans and dates to the Tarumanagara Kingdom period between the 5th and 7th centuries. This inscription stands as one of the few surviving written records from that early era.

The inscriptions display Sanskrit text and reveal how Indian cultural ideas reached this region in ancient times. These influences remain visible today in the symbols and writing patterns carved into the stone.

The site is accessible by walking down a series of steps that lead to the riverbank in the Cibungbulang district. The path can become slippery in wet conditions, so sturdy footwear is helpful for the visit.

The inscription contains rare examples of early Indonesian writing systems carved directly into natural rock. This craftsmanship reveals the advanced stone-carving techniques that were employed in that ancient period.
