The institution began operations in 1965 as the successor to Baperki University, which had been run by an organization of Indonesian citizens of Chinese descent. In 1998, the campus gained somber recognition when student protests against the Suharto regime led to the deaths of several demonstrators on its grounds.
The name honors three pillars of Indonesian nationhood that also appear in the institution's emblem. Students and staff commonly refer to the campus using the shortened form Usakti in daily conversation and introductions.
