Kemayoran Airport, Former international airport in Central Jakarta, Indonesia.
Kemayoran Airport was a former international airport in Central Jakarta with two intersecting asphalt runways at 2 meters elevation. The passenger terminal included restaurants and various facilities to serve travelers passing through.
The facility was developed in 1940 by Dutch colonial authorities from swampy marshland and became a key transport hub for Southeast Asia. Operations ended in 1985 when all flights were transferred to the new Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.
The site symbolized the beginning of international air travel for Indonesia and embodied national progress during the independence period. Visitors can still sense the importance this airport held for the development of modern Indonesia.
The site is no longer accessible as a functioning airport, but the former runways have been converted into major roads used daily by Jakarta residents. The old control tower still stands and can be viewed from various points around the area.
The runways were rebuilt into wide roads after closure and are now part of the city's street network. This unexpected transformation shows how a symbol of the past became integrated into modern Jakarta's daily life.
