Sri Gethuk, Natural waterfall in Gunung Kidul, Indonesia

Sri Gethuk is a waterfall in the Gunung Kidul region of Java, Indonesia, where water cascades over layered limestone rock and falls into the Oya River below. The flow splits into several streams as it moves across wide flat rock surfaces before reaching the river.

Excavations in a nearby cave showed that people lived in this area thousands of years ago, making it one of the older known inhabited zones in the region. The Oya River, which the waterfall feeds into, likely served as a key water source for those early communities.

Locals often call this waterfall Slempret, a name tied to stories passed down through generations in the surrounding villages. The older name is still used in everyday conversation and gives the place a layer of meaning beyond what visitors first see.

Getting to the waterfall requires walking down steps and crossing uneven rocky ground, so shoes with a firm grip make the visit more comfortable and safe. Basic facilities such as parking and restrooms are available at the site.

Visitors can swim directly in the natural pools that form between the rocks at the base of the falls, which is not common at most waterfalls in the area. The Oya River downstream also offers traditional rafting on the water, giving the site two very different ways to experience it.
