Pangkalanbun, Administrative center in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia
Pangkalanbun is the administrative center of Central Kalimantan, situated along river valleys. The city comprises multiple urban districts that developed around these waterways and their natural surroundings.
The city was founded in 1806 when the Kotawaringin princes moved their administrative headquarters from the older settlement of Kotawaringin Lama. This shift made it the new seat of regional power.
The Yellow Palace, or Istana Kuning, once housed the rulers of Kotawaringin and displays traditional Indonesian architectural design. The building shapes the city's character and reflects its royal heritage.
Iskandar Airport provides air connections, while the Panglima Utar Kumai port offers maritime routes to other regional destinations. Both transportation hubs make the city accessible for travelers arriving from different directions.
The city's name comes from an earlier place called Sukabumi Pongkalan Bu'un, referring to a resident named Bu'un who once lived there. This naming reflects an Indonesian tradition of honoring local figures through geography.
