State University of Malang, Public university in Lowokwaru district, Malang, Indonesia
The State University of Malang is a public institution in the Lowokwaru district of East Java, spread across several locations in Malang and Blitar. The main campus stands on Jalan Semarang 5 and includes eight faculties with numerous lecture halls, libraries, and administration buildings forming a sprawling complex.
The institution was founded in 1954 as a teacher training college known as PTPG Malang with 127 students and initially served only to educate teachers. In 1999, it gained status as a full state university, expanding beyond teacher education to offer additional academic disciplines.
The name reflects its geographic location in Lowokwaru and identifies one of the largest educational institutions in the region, mainly attracting Indonesian students from Java. Many prospective teachers come here to complete their pedagogical training in different fields, giving the institution its practical character.
The grounds are publicly accessible and easy to walk through, though some areas may be restricted for visitors without official business. Most buildings cater to Indonesian students, but information about programs and facilities is often available in English as well.
The institution operates Graha Cakrawala, a large multipurpose building used for regional sports events and concerts that holds around 7,000 visitors. This hall connects academic life with public events and turns the campus into a cultural destination beyond the student community.
