Masalembu Islands, Remote archipelago in Sumenep, Indonesia
The Masalembu Islands consist of three main islands – Masalembu, Masakambing, and Keramaian – located in the Java Sea between Madura and Borneo. They are sparsely populated and inhabited by fishers and their families who make their homes in this island setting.
The islands developed from a small fishing settlement and are now part of Sumenep Regency. The population has grown over time as more people recognized the fishing opportunities the region offered.
The population speaks mainly Madurese and comes from Madura and Bugis communities whose daily lives are deeply rooted in fishing traditions. The local people have preserved their own customs and skills that have been handed down through generations.
Reaching the islands requires several hours by boat from Sumenep, and visitors should be prepared for limited infrastructure. Electricity is supplied by diesel generators, so it is wise to be mindful of light usage at night.
The islands are surrounded by extensive coral reefs, mangrove forests, and seagrass beds that support a variety of marine species. These ecosystems form the economic foundation for the local population and make the waters rich in biological resources.
