Raya, Mountain peak in Borneo, Indonesia.
Raya is the highest peak of the Schwaner Mountains in central Borneo, rising to about 7,474 feet (2,278 meters) above sea level inside Bukit Baka-Bukit Raya National Park. The mountain is covered in dense tropical rainforest from its base all the way to its summit.
The Schwaner range was mapped by European explorers in the 19th century, though local populations had long known this mountain. The national park protecting this summit was officially created in the 1990s.
The Dayak communities living near this peak have long used the mountain as a landmark and reference point in their oral traditions. Its name appears in local stories tied closely to the forest and its animals.
A permit from the park administration and a local guide are needed before attempting to reach the summit, as there are no marked trails. The dry season is the best time to go, since heavy rains can make the paths very difficult to follow.
Raya sits exactly on the administrative boundary between West Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan, meaning its summit technically belongs to two provinces at once. This makes it one of the few peaks in Indonesia that serves as a living border marker deep inside a rainforest.
