Melbourne Glaciarium, Indoor ice rink in South Melbourne, Australia
The Melbourne Glaciarium was an indoor ice skating venue in South Melbourne with a large frozen surface for skaters. The facility accommodated thousands of visitors and offered rental skates along with spectator seating throughout the building.
The venue opened in 1906 and was Australia's second indoor ice skating facility, following a similar establishment in Adelaide. It played a role in the early development of ice sports venues across the country.
The venue incorporated music performances with a grand piano in its orchestra area, conducted by Frank Bladen who performed with Pavlova and Gilbert and Sullivan orchestras.
The ice rink was easy to access and offered space for many visitors at the same time. Visitors could rent equipment on site, which made participation straightforward.
The venue made film history by showing the world's first double feature in 1911 and presenting Australia's first color film in 1912. These technical milestones connected winter sports with early cinema innovation.
