Jounama Dam

Jounama Dam is an embankment dam crossing the Tumut River in the Snowy Mountains that captures water for power generation. The structure holds back a substantial reservoir used for both electricity production and water management in the region.

The dam was completed in 1968 as part of the Snowy Mountains Scheme, a major hydroelectric project started in the post-war years. This initiative transformed the region's infrastructure and reshaped how water and energy were managed across the area.

The construction of Jounama Dam led to the relocation of Talbingo town residents, marking a significant change in local community patterns.

The site offers views across the reservoir and surrounding mountain landscape, best experienced from walking paths around the dam. The area is relatively easy to access, though proper footwear is helpful for uneven terrain.

The reservoir attracts anglers and water enthusiasts, though it remains less visited than larger lakes in the region. Visitors can find quiet spots for fishing or simply enjoying the water without the crowds of more famous destinations.
