Lake Tekapo, Alpine lake and settlement in Mackenzie District, New Zealand
Lake Tekapo is an alpine glacial lake in the Mackenzie region with turquoise water colored by fine glacial silt from the Godley and Macaulay Rivers. The small settlement sits on the shore and serves as a hub for visitors exploring the lake and surrounding mountains.
The settlement began when John and Barbara Hay started the first sheep farm on the shores in 1857, following James Mackenzie's inland expedition that opened up the region. This early farming community gradually became the tourism hub it is today.

The location enjoys ample sunny days and clear nights year-round, making it accessible for various activities. The elevation and alpine climate mean weather can change quickly, so layered clothing is recommended.
The area is part of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, offering dark skies and excellent conditions for stargazing and southern aurora displays. This makes it a special destination for those interested in the night sky and astrophotography seeking clear views without light pollution.
