Watson, Federal electoral division in New South Wales, Australia
Watson is an electoral division in southwestern Sydney that encompasses multiple suburbs including Ashbury, Bankstown, Belmore, Campsie, Canterbury, and Lakemba. The division combines inner-city and suburban areas in a relatively compact region within the broader metropolitan area.
The division was established in 1992 to replace the former Division of St George. It was named after Chris Watson, the first Labor Prime Minister of Australia who led the nation in the early 1900s.
The area is known for its diverse population with large communities from many countries and cultures that shape local life and character. This diversity is visible in the shops, restaurants, and religious spaces that define the everyday appearance of the neighborhoods.
The division is managed by the Australian Electoral Commission and undergoes boundary adjustments periodically to maintain balanced representation. Visitors interested in electoral history can learn about past results and local voting patterns at community centers and libraries throughout the area.
During the 2017 postal survey on same-sex marriage legalization, the area recorded one of the highest rejection rates at approximately 70 percent. This result differed markedly from the national trend and reflected the distinct values and beliefs of its communities.
