Burns Philp Building, Sydney, Commercial building in Bridge Street, Sydney, Australia
The Burns Philp Building is a five-story commercial structure on Bridge Street with sandstone walls, arched openings, and a vaulted entry vestibule. The structure combines steel, timber, masonry, and cast iron elements into a robust construction typical of its period.
The structure was built starting in 1899 by Mitchell and King following designs by architects A. L. and G. McCredie for the Burns Philp Company. The company used it as headquarters for its thriving trade business in the late 1800s.
The building displays Federation Romanesque architecture that reflected the prosperity of Australian maritime trading companies in its era. This design style was a mark of commercial success and still shapes the character of the street today.
The building now houses separate office units for various tenants and serves as workspace for multiple businesses. Since it contains private offices, interior access is limited, but the facade and entrance remain visible from the street.
A fire from the neighboring George Patterson House caused major damage to the rear section in 1996. The incident led to restoration work that modernized the building while preserving its historic front appearance.
