Linden Observatory Complex, Astronomical observatory in Blue Mountains, Australia
Linden Observatory Complex is an astronomical observatory in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, featuring multiple research buildings and a sliding roof structure. Inside sits a 76cm reflector telescope mounted on an equatorial platform for detailed sky observation.
Ken Beames founded this site in the 1940s and built what was then the largest telescope in New South Wales. Its prominence in Australian astronomy was later overshadowed by the opening of Siding Spring Observatory in the mid-1960s.
The site hosts regular night sky observation programs that connect visitors with the stars and planets overhead. These experiences have introduced many people to astronomy and made the science feel real and accessible.
Visitors must book in advance to join scheduled observation sessions or arrange private group visits. It is best to plan ahead and check current availability before heading to the site.
The complex houses an early Australian-made planetarium device that Ken Beames created in his engineering workshops. This hand-crafted instrument reflects the practical engineering skill that went into building the entire facility.
