Northern Beaches, Local government area in Northern Beaches region, Australia.
The Northern Beaches is an administrative region along the Sydney coastline that stretches from Manly to Palm Beach across about 254 square kilometers. The area is divided into five wards managed by a council and combines several coastal communities with different characters.
The area was formed in 2016 when three existing councils merged to create a larger administrative structure. This merger made it the fourth-largest local authority in New South Wales.
The region was home to the Kayamaygal and Birrabirragal, groups of the Dharug language family, whose connection to the land remains alive today in place names and local stories. Visitors can discover this heritage through artworks and sites that honor the first inhabitants' legacy.
The region has different entry points and attractions, so it makes sense to explore the area based on your interests, whether you prefer beaches or town centers. Good public transport and parking are available, but planning your route helps you make the most of your time.
The area received the A.R. Bluett Memorial Award in 2022 for its achievements in infrastructure development and community service delivery. This recognition highlights ongoing improvements and investments made throughout the region.
