Milne Bay Province

Milne Bay Province, Province with 160 islands in Papua New Guinea.

Milne Bay Province spans approximately 14,345 square kilometers (5,540 square miles) of land and contains around 160 inhabited islands at the eastern tip of Papua New Guinea. The region combines land areas with vast stretches of ocean and features a diverse island landscape.

The region was the site of the Battle of Milne Bay in 1942, a major military campaign between Australian and Japanese forces during World War II. Australian forces then established a naval base in this strategically important location.

Communities speak 48 different languages and practice traditional crafts like wood carving, canoe building, and basket weaving as part of their daily work. These skills remain central to local life and are passed down through families and generations.

The capital city Alotau connects to Port Moresby through domestic flights, and various boats regularly shuttle between the islands. Visitors should plan flexibly since ferry schedules depend on weather conditions and local timetables.

Fergusson Island features active thermal zones with natural hot springs, mud pools, and geysers that display rare geological formations. These geothermal features result from the region's volcanic activity.
