Kanaha Pond State Wildlife Sanctuary
Kanaha Pond State Wildlife Sanctuary, Wildlife refuge and National Natural Landmark in Kahului, Maui County, United States.
The 208-acre wetland sanctuary contains brackish water bodies that support fifty different bird species and over one hundred native plant varieties.
The sanctuary originated from two royal fishponds constructed by King Kapiʻiohookalani in the 1700s to provide food during annual fish breeding periods.
Three endangered Hawaiian bird species find protection within the sanctuary: the Hawaiian stilt, Hawaiian coot, and Hawaiian duck, highlighting native wildlife conservation.
Visitors access the sanctuary through a paved walkway at the southern end, with a parking lot located off Haleakala Highway near Da Kitchen Café.
The sanctuary features a 14,785-foot-long predator-exclusion fence, which will become the longest protective barrier of its type in the United States.
