Kanaha Pond State Wildlife Sanctuary
Kanaha Pond State Wildlife Sanctuary, Wildlife refuge and National Natural Landmark in Kahului, Maui County, United States.
Kanaha Pond State Wildlife Sanctuary is a 208-acre wetland refuge located in Kahului, Maui, featuring brackish water bodies that support diverse wildlife. The sanctuary is home to approximately 50 bird species and over 100 native plant varieties that thrive in this environment.
The site originated from two royal fishponds built by King Kapiʻiohookalani in the 1700s to support fish breeding for food production. These historical structures eventually became the foundation for today's conservation area.
The sanctuary provides refuge for three endangered Hawaiian bird species: the Hawaiian stilt, Hawaiian coot, and Hawaiian duck. This commitment to protecting native animals reflects how deeply the local community values preserving its natural heritage.
Visitors can access the site through a paved walkway at the southern end, with a parking lot located off Haleakala Highway near a nearby restaurant. The path provides straightforward access, and the convenient location makes visiting easy to arrange.
A long protective fence has been built to keep predators away from the site and protect bird populations. This construction project will become one of the longest barriers of its kind in the United States.
