Malaspina Glacier, Piedmont glacier in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, Alaska.

The Malaspina Glacier extends 65 kilometers in width and 45 kilometers in length, covering an area equivalent to the state of Rhode Island.

Alessandro Malaspina, a Tuscan explorer serving in the Spanish Navy, navigated the region in 1791, leading to the glacier's current name.

The Tlingit people named this massive ice formation Sít' Tlein, which translates directly to big glacier in their language.

The glacier's surface features distinct patterns of moraines, resulting from the convergence of three major glaciers: Seward, Agassiz, and Marvine/Hayden.

Between 1980 and 2000, the glacier system lost approximately 20 meters in thickness, contributing 0.5 percent to global sea level rise.
