Mount Kennedy, Mountain summit in Kluane National Park, Yukon, Canada
Mount Kennedy is a mountain in the Saint Elias range that rises above 4,200 meters within Kluane National Park near the Alaska border. Several glaciers surround the peak, with the Dusty Glacier prominent on its northern face.
The mountain was named in 1964 to honor President John F. Kennedy following his assassination. A year later, an expedition reached the summit in 1965, marking the first time climbers stood on what had been a remote and unconquered peak.
Robert F. Kennedy placed personal items at the summit during the first ascent in 1965, including his brother's inaugural address and commemorative medallions.
Climbing this peak requires advanced glacier mountaineering skills and preparation for severe weather at high altitude. Base camps are typically set up on Cathedral Glacier before the technical portion of the ascent begins.
Before its first ascent in 1965, this peak held the distinction of being North America's highest unclimbed summit. The first climbers left personal mementos at the top as a tribute to the president the mountain honored.
