Mount Steele

Mount Steele, Mountain peak in Saint Elias Mountains, Canada.

Mount Steele is a peak in the Saint Elias Mountains rising to 5,073 meters and ranks among Canada's highest summits. The massive peak emerges from a glaciated landscape marked by steep, icy slopes and snow-covered terrain.

The peak was first summited in August 1935 by Walter A. Wood and his expedition team, who approached from the east through heavy snow. This early ascent marked a milestone in exploring this remote mountain region.

The peak is named after Sam Steele, a North-West Mounted Police officer who maintained order during the Klondike Gold Rush era. His name reflects the region's connection to that transformative period.

Visitors should prepare for extreme conditions and constantly shifting weather, as this mountain experiences difficult climate year-round. Advanced technical skills in glacier and ice climbing are essentially required for any attempt.

In July 2007, a massive ice collapse on the north face released roughly 3 million cubic meters of material. This dramatic event shows how constantly these high peaks are reshaping themselves.
