Mount Wood, Mountain summit in Kluane National Park, Canada
Mount Wood is a mountain summit in the Saint Elias range located within Kluane National Park, rising to 4,842 meters elevation. The peak sits amid an area of substantial glacial coverage and alpine terrain characteristic of this remote northern mountain region.
The peak was named in 1900 by surveyor James J. McArthur after Zachary Taylor Wood, a North-West Mounted Police inspector during the Klondike Gold Rush era. Its first successful ascent took place in 1941 when a climbing expedition led by Walter Wood reached the summit.
The mountain stands as a testament to Canadian mountaineering history, with the first successful ascent achieved by Walter Wood, Anderson Blakewell and Albert Jackman in 1941.
Climbers need advanced skills in glacier travel and ice climbing to reach this summit, as the terrain requires technical expertise. Late spring typically offers the best weather window for an attempt, when conditions are most stable.
The peak is located within a UNESCO World Heritage Site and stands amid some of the region's most active and extensive glacier systems. It neighbors other prominent summits like Mount Steele and Mount Lucania, forming part of one of North America's most remote mountain clusters.
