Mount Lucania, Mountain summit in Kluane National Park, Canada
Mount Lucania is a mountain summit in the Saint Elias range that rises to approximately 5,240 meters (17,200 feet). Located within Kluane National Park, it ranks as Canada's third-highest peak and North America's eighth-highest.
The first successful ascent took place in 1937 when Bradford Washburn and Robert Hicks Bates reached the summit with air support. They landed on Walsh Glacier and then trekked through remote wilderness to complete their climb.
The peak takes its name from the RMS Lucania ship, which transported the Duke of Abruzzi for his 1897 expedition. This historical connection shaped how the mountain became known among mountaineers.
Climbing the peak demands extensive preparation, park permits, and specialized alpine equipment for high-altitude conditions. Visitors should expect glacial terrain, extreme altitude, and unpredictable weather throughout any expedition attempt.
In 2022, researchers discovered Bradford Washburn's original climbing equipment from 1937 on Walsh Glacier. The items had been transported across the ice for many decades, revealing traces of early mountaineering.
