Kenai Peninsula Borough, Administrative region in Alaska, United States
The Kenai Peninsula extends 150 miles southwest from the Chugach Mountains, bordered by Cook Inlet and Prince William Sound, featuring numerous lakes and rivers.
The discovery of the Kenai oil field in 1961 transformed the region into a petroleum and natural gas production center, surpassing other mineral outputs in Alaska.
The name originates from the Kenaitze, Native Athabascan people who named the peninsula Yaghanen, translating to 'the good land' in their language.
Two major highways connect the peninsula to Anchorage, with airports in Kenai and Homer providing additional transportation options for visitors and residents.
The peninsula contains the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, spanning two million acres and providing protected habitats for diverse wildlife populations.
