Cooper Landing originated after Joseph Cooper discovered gold in the 1880s, making him one of the first American prospectors to find gold along the Kenai region's rivers. The building itself was constructed between 1910 and 1920 as a simple log cabin and later developed into a general store and post office under Jack Lean, who shaped the settlement through his mail delivery and dog-sled services.
The building displays hunting trophies like caribou and moose antlers on its facade, reflecting how early residents lived and supported themselves.
