Juchipila, Municipality with archaeological center in Zacatecas, Mexico
Juchipila is a municipality in Zacatecas covering 338.6 square kilometers within the Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range. The landscape is defined by the Juchipila River canyon cutting between the Sierra de Morones and Sierra de Nochistlán.
The Caxcan people first inhabited this area and established the Las Ventanas settlement with roots reaching back to the first centuries AD. The present-day town of Juchipila was founded later in 1825.
The Fiesta de Xúchitl takes place each June, drawing on pre-Hispanic traditions tied to Xōchipilli, a deity honored in local celebrations. State authorities recognized this festival as intangible cultural heritage in 2015.
The location sits roughly 160 kilometers southwest of Zacatecas City and includes approximately 30 small localities spread across the terrain. The area is accessible year-round, though June offers the chance to experience local festivities.
The Las Ventanas archaeological site features intricate stone fortifications that served as a base during indigenous resistance against Spanish colonization in the 1530s. These defensive structures reveal the strategic importance the location held for local peoples during early contact.
